aug 20, 1990 - TNC purchases Diamond Y Spring Preserve and collaborates with BHP

Description:

Several rare and endangered species of fauna and flora have been recorded
from the saline springs that flow through the Preserve, a feature which
led to The Nature Conservancy purchasing the site in 1990. Although oil
and gas extraction had been carried out since the 1970s, BHP
Petroleum’s policy of minimal interference and impact, imposed from
the outset, greatly contributed to the welfare of the site. A series of mutually
beneficial discussions between the two organizations led to concrete
actions which have helped restore and manage the site. They ranged
from habitat restoration in abandoned drilling locations and other sites,
to the general improvement of the region’s aesthetic beauty, and the
introduction of nature tours for interested groups
