Jim Crow laws were adopted to separate the African Americans from the whites in places such as school, hospitals, restrooms, etc. Many African Americans were required to pay a poll tax and take a literary test to vote. Some states had the grandfather clause which said if your grandfather did not vote then you can not vote.
