Jacques Cartier was a French/ Breton explorer who claimed what is now Canada for France. Jacques Cartier was the first European to describe and map the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence river. He was born on December 23, 1491, Saint-Malo, France and died on September 1, 1557. He was married to Mary Catherine des Granches. Jacques Cartier was known to be the first European to travel inland in North America.
