NASA's Viking 1 landed on Mars at Chryse Planitia, which is in the northern equatorial region on Mars. It remained operational for six years and relayed the first color panoramas of Mars. There was actually two Vikings, Viking 1 and 2. Viking 2 however landed on Utopia Planitia and remianed operational for 3 years. These two landers also tried to find signs of life on the planet. They found some strange chemical activity on the Martian soil, but there was no real solid evidence of organisms living on Mars.
