apr 2, 1865 - Third Battle of Petersburg (Breakthrough at Petersburg)
Description:
April 2, 1865: The previous day, the Union had won the battle at Five Forks. On April 2, a Union army, led by General Horatio Wright, crept out of their trenches and dashed across no-man's land, crossing into Confederate boundaries. While trying to reach his troops, Confederate General A.P. Hill was killed. Confederate soldiers from Fort Gregg prevented the Union from entering the city that night. The battle was important because after the Union and Confederacy put an end to all the fighting, Lee ordered the evacuation of Petersburg and Richmond. This gave Grant control of Petersburg and caused the fall of the capitol of the Confederacy.
