jan 10, 1848 - French Revolution of 1848

Description:

In the 1840s, radicals formed secret societies to work towards a French republic and Utopian socialists wanted an end to private ownership of property. Near the end of the decade and due to a recession, factories shut down and people lost their jobs. Poor harvests also caused for a rise in bread prices. Because the government attempted to silence the angry crowds of people that wanted their public meetings in February 1848, the “February Days” came and havoc spread in the streets. As the turmoil spread, Louis Philippe abdicated which led to the start of the Second Republic. From the beginning of the republic, middle-class people wanted moderate political reforms and socialists wanted social and economic change to help the poor. During the “June Days,” upper-class and middle-class interests gained control of the government and they shut down national workshops. Angry workers took up the streets and cried “Bread or Lead!” At least 1,500 people were killed before the government put a stop to the rebellion. By the end of 1848, the National Assembly wanted to restore order so they issued a constitution. The constitution made a strong president, a one-house legislature, and the right to vote to all adult men.
