(Unity)
Description:
After invasions by Napoleon, Italians dreamed more than ever of national unity. Nationalists would organize secret forces to get Austrian forces out of northern Italy. In the 1830s, Giuseppe Mazzini founded a secret society called Young Italy, whose goal was to set up an independent, free republican nation. He even set up a republic in Rome, but it was quickly brought down and Mazzini spent most of his life in exile. Eventually in 1861, Victor Emmanuel II was crowned king of Italy (with the exception of Rome and Venetia). After several wars, Italy reconquered the two areas and once again became a united empire.
