jan 18, 1871 - Bismarck and German Unity
(Unity)
Description:
Otto Von Bismarck went from being a simple noble to the chancellor of Prussia in 1862. As chancellor, Bismarck built up the Prussian army and led them in three wars, each of which was a step closer to German unity. But first, Bismarck had to form an alliance with Austria to help ensure he was successful. Bismarck later attacked Austria though, and annexed it. Bismarck then created a new confederation dominated by Prussia. France was not a fan of this, so the two went to war. France lost and was forced to accept a humiliating peace. Bismarck later drafted a constitution which set up a two-house legislature, and the German empire emerged as a European industrial giant.
