The pictures that were captured by Mariner 9 were the exciting images the public had been waiting for. The photographs depicted massive inactive volcanoes, such as Olympus Mons that is taller than Mt. Everest and wider than Arizona. The photos also revealed a canyon system, later named Valles Marineris, that was so long it could stretch from New York to Los Angeles
