Writings often embellished. Some truth to them, like with Juan de Onate who brutally punished Pueblo Native Americans and enslaved them; and Hernan de Soto forced Natives to haul his army's gear. But not all were, like Bartolome de Las Casas who advocated to pass laws to protect the natives.
Also pretty hypocritical since English colonists committed very similar atrocities. Puritans were intolerant of natives and colonists could be just as greedy as conquistadors.
