jan 1, 1801 - Thomas Jefferson Inaugurated
Description:
Believed that the ideal American would be a 'yeoman farmer.' Jefferson, before becoming president, had set up a system to easily divide and sell land, by chopping it into 6-mile squares. Each of these would be divided into 36 sections of 640 acres of land, which each had to be bought together. This would cost $640 or more, so most farming families on $100/year couldn't affford land.
