NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Alliance. It is a military alliance between certain North American and European countries, its intention is to promise freedom and safety to all of its member counties, if an attack was made against one member, it would be like attacking all of them. NATO was Canada's first military alliance made during a time of peace. Although in the beginning, Canada contributed many military and political resources to NATO, their contributions started to decline in the 50's as many Canadians were unhappy with the amount of assets being moved out of the country to help the others. This gives many people reason to look down upon Canada for the selfishness involved in cutting down on military funds, but the importance of this treaty to Canada stands in the fact that it was negotiated by them. Canada contributed a great many of the policies that are a part of the NATO treaty today.
