Dred Scott was an African American who lived in a free state but yet was still forced to be a slave. This matter was brought the court. The Supreme Court decided that African Americans had no rights what so ever and classified Scott as property. It was determined that slave owners could take their slaves anywhere. This concluded that slavery was legal everywhere.
