In the U.S slavery was banned north of the 36/30 latitude line. When Missouri came into the union there was a big dispute over if it should be a slave state or a free state. To make it fair Maine was made a free state and Missouri was a slave state, keeping an equal balance. This is known as the Missouri Compromise.
