With much civil unrest in the Balkans and much of Europe, a group of radical nationalist sought to assassinate Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo. In Europe, there were many secret alliances, lots of imperial tensions, military stockpiling and growing nationalism, all of which culminated into two main alliances (Triple Entente and the Central Powers) and massive total war.
