Description:

In India when they started to eradicate smallpox they started off going door to door giving vaccines. In six days they reached 100 million houses, At first encountering 500 cases of smallpox grew to 11 thousand cases a week. To make this more efficient they placed shrines of Shitala Mata the Hindu goddess of smallpox. The people who came to those shrines needed to be vaccinated. They also played drums near the country side so the people who heard them working in the farms came to the village.
