feb 15, 1898 - Sinking of the USS Maine

Description:

The sinking of the USS Maine was very important to the start of the Spanish-American War. Although it was seemingly just an accident, the United States accused Spain of sabotaging their ship and blowing it up. The explosion killed 260 officers in Havana harbor, which devastated the country. The sinking caused a huge spout of tension between Spain and the United States, helping spark the declaration of war for both countries.
