may 6, 1882 - Chinese Exclusion Act
Description:
The Chinese Exclusion Act was the first significant law restricting immigration into the United States. It was passed by Congress and signed by Chester A. Arthur (president). This provided a 10-year ban on Chinese labor immigration. This ban ended up being extended until it was made permanent in 1902. Congress passed the act to relax people's concerns about maintaining white "racial purity". The Chinese remained ineligible to become citizens until 1943.
