Description:
Ratified January 16th, 1919 and took effect on January 17th, 1920. The Eighteenth Amendment prohibited the making, transporting, and selling of alcoholic beverages. One of the weaknesses of the amendment was it failed to outlaw the possession of alcohol. Overall, the 18th amendment led to a rise in organized crime and police were bribed to look the other way when they encountered illegal activity.
