Description:
March 22, 1765. Britain’s first direct tax on the American colonies. Taxed items such as newspapers and legal documents, allowing the British to read all of the news in the colonies. Controversy over this tax led to its repeal in the colonies. This was by no means the first tax on the colonies that would lead to dissent.
