jan 5, 1910 - Harlem Renaissance Begins

Description:

During the Great Migration, where about 300,000 African Americans moved to the North from the South, Harlem became one area dominated by African Americans. During this time, African Americans began to gain more rights and they developed a ‘New-African culture’ that was led by some of the most famous musicians and artists to this day. Led by figures like Louis Armstrong, jazz music developed and became extremely popular. Writers like Langston Hughes were also hugely influential. The social life that was previously enjoyed by whites only began to be enjoyed by African Americans as well as they enjoyed social clubs like the Cotton Club in Harlem. Overall, the Harlem Renaissance was a time of great social progress and the development of a new cultural identity for African Americans.
