Description:

Fort Donelson in Tennessee was a confederate-held base. Under Ulysses S. Grant, the North surrounded the fort until they were eventually forced to surrender. This battle was significant because it was the first significant Union victory, and it gave the Union access to Tennessee for further attacks. The battle of Fort Donelson in Tennessee set up future conflict in the state, such as the battle of Shiloh.
