apr 12, 1861 - Attack on Fort Sumter
Description:
Fort Sumter was a Union-held fort near Charleston, South Carolina. After Lincoln was elected, Confederate leaders learned of Lincoln’s plan to send supply ships to the Fort, and demanded that Union troops evacuate the fort. The Union generals refused, and Confederate forces shot at the fort for 34 hours. No men on either side died from the combat, but the battle marked the first battle of the Civil War and gained support from the North and South to continue fighting.
