Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States, was elected during a time of high tension between the North and South. Shortly after he was elected, seven Southern states seceded from the Union, and the Civil War began. Lincoln goes down in history as one of the best presidents, as his leadership for the Union, fight to abolish slavery, and modernization of the economy all helped the country. His Emancipation Proclamation made abolition an intent of the Civil War and is still one of the most . However, Lincoln was assassinated during his second term by John Wilkes Booth.
