dec 31, 1856 - Dred Scott vs. Sandford
Description:
Dred Scott was a slave who had lived with his owner in a free state and then returned to Missouri. Scott argued that he should be freed since he was in a free state. The Supreme Court ruled that no African American, whether a slave or freed, was a U.S. Citizen, so they could not go to court either. The ruling essentially meant that African Americans were property, which enraged abolitionists and made the North-South relationship even more tense.
