James Madison was a Founding Father and the fourth US president. His main contributions were to the US Constitution, which he contributed many ideas to. Madison was a strong supporter of a strong federal government. In 1792, he founded the Democratic-Republican Party with Thomas Jefferson, which was America’s first opposition political party. Before his presidency, Madison helped gain support for the ratification of the Constitution by writing lots of the Federalist papers and he also helped draft the Bill of Rights. He led the US into the War of 1812 against Britain, which did get some criticism. After the war, he helped the US improve internally and made economic improvements to the country such as setting up the 2nd national bank. Overall, Madison is well regarded for his role as a Founding Father and president.
