sep 3, 1939 - Start of the battle of the Atlantic
Description:
The battle of the Atlantic was the longest battle in WW2. Axis submarines were trying to sink Allied convoys that were transporting goods, primarily to Britain. Materials were being transported from Canada, and eventually the US to Britain, but many were being sunk by German or Italian submarines. The Allies wanted to keep control of Atlantic shipping routes. The Axis sought to cause heavy losses in the cargo that was shipped to Europe. Axis submarines were targeting American cargo ships, particularly in the night, because of the lights from the cities. To try to stop this, the U.S. Navy once again resorted to a convoy system (similar to ww1).
