This court case was a very controversial event during the Civil War and increased tensions between the North and South and angered many abolitionist. Dred Scott a former slave who lived with his owner in a free state but then returning to a slave state. Scott argued with the Supreme court that the time spent in a free state should grant him emancipation. However the Court stated no black, free or slave, could gain US citizenship and because of this blacks couldn’t petition for emancipation in court,
