The main purpose was to honor the dead and to rededicate the living to the war effort in order to preserve freedom.Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal…that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that this government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from this earth.This speech served to reignite the Union soldiers to fight against the Confederacy.
