Hertha Marks Ayrton’s original name is Phoebe Sarah Marks. She was born 28th of April in 1854 in Portsea, England. In 1876 she entered in the University of Cambridge, where she studied mathematics. And later, she became a mathematics teacher. In 1884 she attended classes at the Institution of Electrical Engineers(IEE). She was the first woman member of the IEE. She discovered the origin of the hissing in the oxidation of the positive carbon electrode, and explained the formation of sand ripples.
