jan 1, 410 BC - Grave Stele of Hegeso, unknown, c.a. 410-400 BCE.

Description:

1. Tomb markers were indicators of wealth and status in Greek society and used to commemorate the dead.
2.Women were usually only found in domestic settings in Greek societies which explains the content in this grave stele. The stele shows Hegeso with a maidservant in a domestic setting.
3. Women were responsible for tending to individual and family tombs which is why women were more common subjects in funerary art.
