- The treaty stated simply that an attack on one of these countries was an attack on them all
- However, after a short burst of enthusiasm, Canada let it's interest in the treaty wane. choosing to treat it as a political arrangement, investing only enough resources to maintain a modicum of credibility within the alliance
- in 1969, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau decided to withdraw half of the Canadian force from NATO Europe
- Anyone who wishes to write Canada off as internationally uninvolved at the beginning of the twenty-first century will find rich ammunition in the long neglect of an alliance Canada helped to found and shape
- However, the alliance of NATO serves as a good illustration of Canadian autonomy developing to the point where they where not only given a seat at the table, they had created the table and were 0on equal footing with all those around it
