Diacetylmorphine, commonly known as heroin, was discovered by the acetylation of morphine by a chemist, Charles Romley Alder Wright, in 1874. He went on to develop 100s of new opiate compounds in his lifetime.Jumping to 1875 - In 1875 the city of San Francisco became the first city in the US to pass legislation, declaring opium use as a misdemeanor offense, in an attempt to diminish opium use. It is believed that smoking opium became popular in the US because of Chinese immigrants that traveled here to work in gold fields and on railroads.
