apr 11, 1713 - Treaty of Utrecht

Description:

The Treaty of Utrecht marked the end to the War of the Spanish Succession (known in North America as Queen Anne's War), a long, complex and bloody conflict whose interlocking political, religious and genealogical elements made it the best example of the European "Balance of Power" wars fought between 1648 and 1791. The War of the Spanish Spanish Succession had been fought over the rather esoteric details of the selection of successor to the Spanish throne, after the infertile (and quite possibly mentally retarded) Hapsburg King Charles II had failed to produce an heir. France had attempted to have Louis XIV's nephew, Philip V, as King, but was resisted by a broad international coalition headed by Great Britain. After nearly 12 years of fighting, the great powers finally reached a negotiated peace at Utrecht in the Netherlands. Although allowing Phillip V to take the throne of Spain, it prevented him from taking the throne of France upon the death of Louis XIV, thereby preventing a union of Europes two most populous countries, and preserving the balance of power. In addition, most Spanish territories in Europe were turned over to the Austrians, English allies, and, due to the complete demolition of French forces in North America, most French territories there (save Quebec) were turned over to the British. The treaty marked the end of attempts for French hegemony in Europe, and had the effect of making Great Britain the most powerful European power. In fact, according to historian G. M. Trevelyan-
"That Treaty, which ushered in the stable and characteristic period of Eighteenth-Century civilization, marked the end of danger to Europe from the old French monarchy, and it marked a change of no less significance to the world at large, — the maritime, commercial and financial supremacy of Great Britain."
