20h 43min, jan 30, 1649 y - Execution of Charles the First

Description:

The Execution of Charles the First early in the morning on the 30th of January 1649 ended the English Civil Wars beginning 13 years of political instability. Despite the instability and economic disaster that followed in the 1650s, the position of England on the continent was, paradoxically, greatly enhanced by the civil war. The English had been through nearly a decade and a half of continuous warfare in Ireland, England and Scotland. The English Armies, since 1487 a footnote in European conflicts, became some of the best in Europe. In 1654, the English Navy of the Commonwealth under Cromwell inflicted a defeat on the previously invincible dutch admiralty.

Moreover, the English Revolution led to the first and most powerful expression of Republican ideals in Europe since the roman times. The power of these ideals would echo through history, leading to the age of revolution between 1783 and 1871, which finally wiped out the last traces of feudalism in Europe.
