jan 1, 1492 - 1492- Christopher Columbus discovering the new word

Description:

During the 15th and 16th centuries wealthy European countries funded exploration efforts for new trading routes Christopher Columbus's voyages were funded by the king and queen of spain. Columbus’ original intent was to find a faster route to the “far east”. Columbus’ calculations where incorrect leading him to assume that the circumference of the earth was much smaller than it actually is. Before the king and queen of Spain agreed to fund his voyage he had presented his plan to both the Portuguese and English governments. On August 3 1492 he left Spain to embark on a two month journey after which he landed on an island in the Bahamas which he called San Salvador. This was significant as this new discovery fueled a new age of European exploration of the New World. The picture shows Christopher Columbus planting the Spanish flag into the ground of the New World. In the background of the picture Columbus’ men are fighting the Native Americans, showing how they had bad relations with each other.
