jan 1, 1825 - The Romantic Era

Description:

The Romantic era occurred between the years 1825 and 1900 to mark the end of the Classical era and the beginning of the Modern era. Most music in this era was programmatic. There was always meaning behind the music. Ludwig van Beethoven was influential in moving us out of the Classical era and into the Romantic era. As opposed to in the Classical era, music in this era was written to break the rules. Chromatic harmony (the use of notes outside the tonal centre) was extremely popular, as well as rubato, an expanded orchestra, and more extreme dynamics than found in the Classical era. Just about every type of form was used, including ternary, binary, rounded binary, and more. Polyphonic, homophonic, and monophonic texture were all used. Popular genres form this era include art songs, lieder, song cycles, program symphonies, operas, and piano solos. The instruments used in this era are almost identical to the instruments used today.
