mar 6, 1857 - Dred Scott v. Sandford
Description:
The Dred Scott v. Sandford case was a case that was argued that a black man, whether enslaved or free, could not be an American citizen and therefore could not sue in federal court. Dred Scott, an enslaved man who had lived in the free state of Illinois and the free territory of Wisconsin before moving back to the slave state of Missouri, had appealed to the Supreme Court in hopes of being granted his freedom. On March 6th, 1857, the Supreme Court made their final decision that Scott was not a free man based on his residence because he was not considered a person under the US Constitution.
