oct 12, 1492 - Columbus Lands in the Americas
Description:
About two months after starting his exhibition, Christopher Columbus and his small fleet of ships (the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria) reached land. They arrived in the Bahamas, but Columbus thought that they had landed on an island of Asia known as the Indies. Because of this, he called natives Los Indios or Indian. He and his crew spent almost 3 months, 96 days to be exact, exploring four islands in the Bahamas and what is today Cuba and Hispaniola. When Columbus returned to Spain, the Monarchs were thrilled with his discoveries and funded three more voyages so he could colonize the areas. The arrival of the Europeans brought with them disease and caused many native populations to decrease dramatically.
