jan 2, 1877 - 1877 Compromise
Description:
Means the end of the reconstruction.
The 2 main republicans in favor of reconstruction had died -> no leadership in Congress in favor of the reconstruction.
1876 -> presidential election which gave birth to this compromise.
Rutherford Hayes (Republican) v. Samuel Tiden (Democrat).
Republican side = people were not optimistic because Grant was himself a Republican. (very unlikely for a republican to be elected after 2 terms of a republican president.
Democratic side = people much more optimistic. 2 years before they had won the majority in the house of representatives, thought that the public opinion would go in their direction.
Did not go as planned, the election was a crisis of national proportions.
1876 = S. Tiden got the majority of the popular vote (50,9%) but not in the electoral college (184 delegates v.s 185 delegates for republicans).
Crisis = 3 states in the South (Louisiana, Carolina and Florida) sent different delegations in Congress -> political conflict taking place between the 3 governments of those states and the democrats. Each side accused the other of manipulating the election. Complete mess.
A specific commity decided on the election results -> Republican majority which gave republicans 19 additional votes in the E. College.
Democrats considered that this was a republican manipulation to deprive them of their victory, so following deal = "we will accept democrats victory providing in exchange for the end of military occupation in the South.
Hayes elected because he accepted that deal.
To remove US army from the South meant that reconstruction will never happen. The region could do whatever that wanted to.
The 1877 compromise made race segregation possile during 80 years
