Created to work in favor of political parties, mostly effective on the democratic sides.

One of the biggest machine of this time = Tammany Hall, NY, designed by William M. Tweed.
The idea -> to higher new immigrants to work in favor of the political party, in exchange for their work they were given a government job or a civil job.

Strong connection with the Spoils System.
