One of the most controversial decision made by the Supreme Court in history.
Dred Scott, a slave residing in Missouri taken by his master in free territories in norther part of the Louisiana Purchase -> now sued for his freedom.

Supreme Court Decision -> No black slave or descendant of a slave could be a citizen of the US and bring a suit in a federal court + a slave was property and Congress had no right to confiscate that property -> made the Missouri Compromise null and void from the day of its enactment.
