dec 29, 1849 - North v. South
Description:
The North = urban and industrial, rapid growth of northern cities coupled with growing tide of immigration -> regular occurence of riots because of job competition
The South = slavery and plantation economy, Cotton Kingdom.
Southern planters produced 75% of the world's annual harvest of raw cotton = more than 50% of the nation's total income for exports.
Economy relied on slave labor = slaves consideres as "human property" of slave owners.
Very strict "slaves codes" in the South.
Tensions grew as abolitionists's actions intensified and South felt threatened + fear of slave rebellion led to creation of white militas and preemptive actions and assassinations of Black slaves.
