Woodrow Wilson won the 1913 elections in a triangular race between two Republican candidates. As President at the start of the First World War in Europe, he initially declared the United States neutral. It was not until April 2, 1917 and Wilson's second term that the country officially declared war on Germany. In 1918, at the end of the conflict, he pushed for the creation of the League of Nations. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919.
