Republican.
Whig presidency (explained below)

Elected and re-elected.

Rise of Corruption.

Commander in chief of the Union during the Civil Wat -> a national hero with positive name recognition.

He also proved to be a very good candidate -> based his campaing on reunifying the whole country.
Proposed the Reconstruction to be a national project, as Lincoln wanted to. -> a success (re-election).

Very popular president during his 8 years in office.

He considered that the best way to have the country reunified was to let Congress handle the national prepared. He decided that the best policy was to do as little as possible and to let other ppl in Congress decide. -> This type of decision = Whig Presidency. -> to avoid the power of one single man.

BUT the country was in need of leadership and the situation became worse.
