jan 1, 1865 - Andrew Johnson
Description:
17th President of the United States.
Democrat.
Did not have the same ideas and intentions than Lincoln.
He was from the South (Tenessee).
Lincoln choosed him because he was loyal to the Union (never supported secession) and he considered he would help him keep the support of the South.
Johnson remoted views that were not accepted in W.D.C by other officials.
He did not care much about black emancipation.
He considered that formal slaves could remind passive citizens. In his mind, black had rights bu they should not vote as well as white women.
He considered that reconstruction should not be reminded on the South -> wanted to protect the South. -> This stance put him at odds with members of Congress.
