FAQ

jan 1, 1801 - D-R in power

Description:

Main goal: put into action the principles of republicanism endorsed by Jefferson's party.

Sought to eliminate Federalist influence in government, especially in the judiciary.

Restore a limited and restrained goverment that protected individual liberties vs. what they considered as Federalist "monarchy".

Focus on simplicity even in the dress, beginning of grassroots politics (close to the people, bbq, etc.)

Agrarian Republic envisioned by Jefferson = "a nation of farmers".

Congress became Democratic-Republican:
- Repealed all internal taxes, including the tax on whiskey that had caused so much trouble a few years before.
- Alien and Sedition Act repealed: those convicted were pardoned and DR declined to use it against Federalists.
- Naturalization Act repealed too.
