Military hero of the war of 1812, outspoken nationalist, famous western Indian fighter, fupporter of slavery gained national appeal -> man of the Frontier, the "farmer from Tennesse" with populist ideas -> was believed to be the one who could protect the American people and guarantee expansion (especially in the South -> protection of slavery and rise of anti-Indian feeling as a consequence of the Red Stick rebellion during the war of 1812)

Became president in 1828 in a landslide election in the South (more than 90%).

Had led the first modern political party (structured, members all over the country, able to raise money, an organisation able to plan and organise a political campaign. => The Democratic Party.
