may 25, 1787 - The Philadelphia Constitutional Convention

Description:

Convention of the 13 states in the Indepedence Hall in Philadelphia to "render the constitution of the Federal government adequate" to the needs of the Union.

Growing sense of crisis, poorly designed instruments for the new demands of self government led to -> with intelligence and persuation, the advocates of a bold nationalist vision of the future of the future for America succeeded in gaining popular support for a new constitutional order -> far stronger central government to the federal system.

55 men attended the meetings at Philadelphia in the summer of 1787: farmers of the American Constitution -> Benjamin Franklin (diplomatic experience and knowledge of the old world), Alexander Hamilton (economic knowledge) and James Madison (knowledge of forms of government). George Washington presided the convention.

Central question: How strong and centralized should the federal government be?

RESULT = Creation of the Constitution of the United States.
