may 5, 1789 - Meeting of Estates-General
Description:
The Bourgeoise wanted the Estates-General formed because they wanted a higher position in society. They thought that they were not being treated and represented properly. The Estates-General would hopefuly give the Bourgeoise a louder voice in feudalist France. The peasants shared much of the same hope. With the peasants getting taxed on almost every aspect of life (including birth, use of communal items such as oven, flour mill, wine press, salt, "rent" for being alive and taking up land," tax for the monarchy, and, to top it all off, could be sent to the bastille with letters de cachet), they also believed that they were being treated poorly.
